With the increasing popularity of same day restorations through CEREC, many patients are curious as to why a dentist would not offer this service at their practice. At the practice of Dr. Vernon O’Berry, we provide patients restorations using traditional methods of fabrication.
We have made this guide to show the benefits of both traditional and same-day restorations, and to explain why our Virginia Beach dental practice prefers the use of lab crafted restorations and prosthetics.
The Benefits of Same Day Restorations
The most apparent benefit that same-day restorations provide to patients and dentists is the ability to achieve a completely restored smile, sometimes within the same appointment as an initial procedure for root canal therapy or other treatment. These restorations are made using digital impressions, ensuring that you do not feel uncomfortable with the use of traditional impression pastes.
In cases of emergency, dentists can use previously obtained impressions in order to create restorations before patients arrive at their office. This allows for the creation of a porcelain crown before any restorative treatment has been performed.
Limitations of CEREC
While CEREC is able to quickly fabricate restorations such as crowns, inlays, and onlays, there are many limitations to these prosthetics. Same-day restorations are less precise than their lab-crafted counterparts and can lead to breakage from ill-fitting prosthetics.
CEREC restorations also provide far fewer options for different materials than lab crafted restorations, and can only be made from materials custom-made for the actual fabrication method.
Why Choose Traditional Restorations?
Our office is committed to providing the highest quality restorations possible. In order to achieve that goal, we use lab crafted restorations. These restorations are specially crafted to fit patients’ unique smiles and are customized to resemble the natural enamel of healthy teeth. With the extensive fabrication tools available to dedicated labs, these restorations are also likely to be as comfortable as possible and can be made from a number of materials dependent on patients’ needs.
These materials can look more or less like natural tooth structures and are able to support varying degrees of bite pressure. These restorations are also able to be far more accurate than those made using CEREC, ensuring that patients are as comfortable as possible when their new teeth are put in place.
